Consequences For Violating Child Support Orders
When a parent fails to support his or her child, in violation of a court order, an enforcement hearing may be held to consider the circumstances and address consequences for the failure to pay. If the parent in violation does not appear, a bench warrant may be issued by the court, which may result in suspension of his or her driver’s license.
To enforce child support agreements, the court may order garnishment of tax refunds, seize assets, freeze bank accounts, deny renewal of a passport and revoke a driver’s license. Continued failure to pay after warnings may also result in a parent being arrested and jailed. In addition, child support debts may be reported to credit agencies, which may affect a parent’s credit rating when buying a home or car and applying for a credit card.
Child support awards are court orders and violations carry consequences. If you have not received the child support payments you are entitled to, you can take action. Laurie A. Bernstein, Esq., will seek enforcement of your award, so that you have the resources you need to care for your children.
